Arrive: Shannon / Depart: Dublin
May your day be touched by a bit of Irish luck, brightened by a song in your heart and warmed by the smiles of the people you love. Irish Saying
Dromoland Castle
“Never Settle For Ordinary.” Tauck’s marketing message rang true as we began the trip with a 2-night stay in a majestic Irish Castle. Available activities on the estate grounds include walking trails, archery, bicycling, fishing, carriage rides.
And Falconry! A WOW moment when the Harris Hawk landed on my gloved fist.
TIP: This is not included in the Tauck tour and these outings are limited in size and number. To avoid disappointment, email Dromoland Castle in advance of your stay to make arrangements.
The Cliffs of Moher
Rugged, raw, breathtaking. The Cliffs of Moher are entirely vertical and the sound of the waves crashing against the shale and sandstone is deafening. On a clear day, you can see the Aran Islands. We weren’t that fortunate, but the hike along the cliff edge is spectacular. For those looking for less adventure, the Cliffs of Moher Visitor Experience is a well-done interpretive center and several lookouts are located a short walk from the parking area.
TIP: The winds here are strong and the weather changes quickly. Dress in layers.
Blarney Castle
The castle dates before 1200. It was destroyed in 1446 and then rebuilt and played a role in multiple wars. One of the key attractions of the castle is the Stone of Eloquence better known as the Blarney Stone. It is said anyone who kisses the Blarney Stone will receive the gift of eloquence. There are also beautiful gardens surrounding the castle.
TIP: The legendary act of eloquence is far from the only attraction here. Be sure to walk the trails and view the gardens. The poison garden is particularly interesting and unusual!
House of Waterford Crystal
The craftsmen are skilled, friendly and proud to share their work. They train for a minimum of 8 years and are responsible for giving each piece the clear and sparkling cut that is distinctively Waterford. Did you know that Waterford makes the trophy for the Memorial Golf Tournament and many other international sporting events?
Irish Pub Culture
“Sláinte,” “slawn-cha.” CHEERS! The pub is an important part of Irish tradition.
Whether the Brazen Head, officially Ireland’s oldest pub, or the lesser known Hairy Lemon, or any of the establishments in the renowned Temple Bar, the warmth and friendliness you’ll experience is unrivaled. It’s about friends coming together and strangers becoming friends. Do take the opportunity to listen to some great music, watch gaelic football, and exchange stories with the locals. Guiness is the perfect pint. Or, if you prefer, order one of the local ciders. You won’t be disappointed. Either is perect with a bowl of Irish stew or fish chowder. And, you can’t go wrong with shephard’s pie or my personal favorite, Dublin coddle.
And More…
There’s so much more to share… The magnificent library at Trinity College and the 9th century gospel manuscript, The Book of Kells. The Guiness Storehouse Brewery* tour and the panoramic views from the 7th floor Gravity Bar. The immersive tasting tour at Jameson Distillery*. A performance of the Irish extravaganza, Riverdance*. The early medieval monastic settlement, Glendalough, the epitome of Ireland’s rugged, romantic landscape. TIP: *These are not included in the Tauck itinerary, but your tour director is happy to help you make arrangements to spend your free time.
The bucolic countryside epitomizes a trip to the Emerald Isle: friendly people, lush hillsides, cozy pubs, and an indomitable spirit.
