Random observation, some people would say you should dress modestly and nobody should go topless. Normally this does not bother me, however if you had my view right now you would likely agree with those on the side of modesty and take a hard pass. Same goes with speedos. Actually, with speedos I’m firmly in the camp that if you are not being timed or training for the Olympics there are always better options. I’m all for people being comfortable with their bodies, I at times argue “I am in shape, round is a shape”, but use discretion people. Time and place for everything and there are children present here. Gonna keep this PG so no further elaboration will be provided on this train of thought and my view.
Quick note to Dreams Dominicus. Handles on the outside of balcony doors would be helpful. Especially when you have unlimited adult beverages. Just saying.
Quick review of Dreams Dominicus. The property is ok. As with most all-inclusives in the DR they are great if you are looking for a beautiful place to park yourself at a resort and enjoy the beach, good weather, and incredible scenery. There are excursions but the areas around the properties are very undeveloped.
The beach is beautiful to look at but the swimming area is somewhat limited due to high boat traffic out front. It is also a bit dangerous as there is a good 3 foot drop off at the waters edge with a lot of rocks. Don’t plan on snorkeling on property, as the folks here have told me there is not much to see.
A major plus for the property is the family-oriented room options. While these are the furthest away from the beach, they are spacious and ideal for families with children or family groups wanting to stay together. The resort provides a golf cart to take you to the beach and other activities. They have 2 and 3 bedroom suite options. The suite we toured had a room with double beds and bathroom, joined to a room with a pull-out couch that could fold into a couch and serve as a living room during the day. These were joined to a 3rd room that had a king size bed and bathroom. Very nice. The best feature is they price this by the room, not the number of occupants. This can be a HUGE savings for families or groups traveling together.
While on the subject of families, there is a kid’s club. Kids 3-12 have their own area that is open 9am to 10pm. Teenagers up to 17 also have their own area, no unescorted adults allowed. This could be good or bad. Babysitting is available for $15/hr/child.
The Disco, again, ok. Kudo’s to the staff though. They had a show ready for us on our tour and really seemed like a fun bunch. The drinks were pretty good as well. Not sure what I was drinking but it was blue with fruit hanging off the sides under a little umbrella. So if your into that kind of thing, you would be right at home.
Large groups can do a dinner on the beach. Ours was buffet style and since it was Cinco De Mayo they stayed with a Mexican theme. The food was ok. Meat a little over cooked but had a good flavor. Keep in mind, that was my first meal of the day at 7:00pm so they pretty much could have served up anything short of shoe leather and I would have thought it was great. Desserts were really good though.
My room was a suite and was VERY nice. Decorations were well done, it has a balcony, living room with tv, couch mini bar and bedroom. Very large and the AC works wonderfully.
The entertainment was mixed as far as quality goes. A bit of a variety show. The comedic part was drawn out and mediocre at best. They had a pair of acrobats Cirque Du Soleil should be looking up as they were fantastic.
Dreams Dominicus Summary:
After touring 17 properties and having some time to reflect, the Resort is ok, not bad, but not one of the top tier resorts. Rooms are very nice. Pools small but lots of them. There is a dive shop on the beach with pickups there at the resort. Nice for those scuba divers who bring their own gear.
Likes: Drinks are strong. Minibar included in room stocked daily. Many pools and a beautiful property. Rooms are spacious and well decorated. Family Friendly, not as much for the kids to do as some of the other properties. The wifi was pretty good.
Dislikes: Not much to do around it. There is a “casino” within walking distance. I’m not sure the average traveler would be comfortable walking to the casino as the walk there is through a very impoverished area. This is NOT unique to this resort. This can be said of many of the resorts in the DR. To be fair I did not go inside the casino. The outside of it was very run down and I did not have a lot of extra time.
The resort had people hawking their wares and they were incredibly aggressive. Would be nice not to have the aggressive sales people set up in the middle of the walk way where you have to go by them. Again, this is not unique to this property. It is common for resorts to rent out space 1 to 2 days a week. It helps to understand that the vendors pay up to $500 USD for their tables which in a country where the average person makes $60-120 USD per month, is a large investment. They have to be aggressive. The resorts also view this as a service to the customer as there are not a lot of places to easily go souvenir shopping.
It is a bit of a drive from the airport.
